I’m Dan West, an award winning photographer and a videographer specialising in live production.
I’ve been photographing my whole life, but started taking it more seriously from 18. I’ve been the picture editor and a deputy editor of Forge Press, the University of Sheffield’s student paper. I won the SPA (Student Publication Association) award for best student photographer in 2016, whilst I was picture editor. In that role I sourced and edited photos, including organising a team of photographers for Varsity, the University’s sporting competition. I also got many opportunities to photograph news, sport and music. Whilst deputy I also continued photographing for the paper, whilst also writing and leading the production side of the paper. Outside of Forge Press I’ve photographed for the student performing groups of SUPAS (Sheffield University Performing Arts Society) and SUTCo (Sheffield University Theatre Company) which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. I was also on the University’s photographic society’s committee for two years, and led many sessions teaching different photographic techniques.
On the video side I only started that since university. I was Head of Technology for Forge TV for a year, and have stayed heavily involved since. I led the station in changing from SD to HD live production, and that’s where we really focused our efforts over the past few years. I took the technical lead of the video aspects for over 40 hours of live coverage, mostly of sporting events, but also of cultural events at Sheffield City Hall, and the student elections. I’ve got experience in vision and audio mixing and camera operating, but my normal responsibility whilst broadcasting was to solve any problems that would arise quickly and quietly. As Forge TV had no dedicated studio I’m very experienced in setting up and dismantling the equipment, and also planning where things should go, with respect to camera angles, ease of use and health and safety.
